Hello! I’m DJ Speed, a 6th year doctoral student in the Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology Department at the University of Chicago. I am a skilled, award-winning plant scientist with expertise in cellular and molecular biology. I am passionate about using science to create broad impacts through conservation, education, and policy. As a mentor and community leader, I strive for gender and racial equity in my work.

My PhD research investigates the plastid association of AZI1, a protein essential for plant systemic immune responses. I have discovered that AZI1 employs a novel two-part targeting mechanism to increasingly target to plastids during the priming of plant defenses. Further work will reveal how AZI1’s infection-induced plastid accumulation affects the systemic movement of defense signals.
